Origin story: There is some conflict of when the story of Mulan is supposed to have taken place, but I will go with the Northen Wei dynasty as it comes from the earliest known works to have mentioned her. This means that Fa Mulan lived circa 400 AD.

She came from the Fa family, a very respectable and rather wealthy family. She was the first and only child born to Fa Zhou and Li and was unfortunate to be born as a woman into a world and time where women held little to no value, and indeed were sometimes considered a hindrance. Things were even worse for Mulan because she grew up not fitting any of the expectations of a woman. She was not delicate, she was outspoken, tomboyish, unconventional and cared more about learning than housework. Indeed, she was often finding ways to make her chores easier and while clever her tactics were frowned upon.

Yet despite how much of an outcast she was in her world, Mulan had a very loving family. They cared for her, and Mulan in turn cared for them and wanted to do her best by them, even if it meant turning into someone that she was not. Sadly, despite her efforts, Mulan was deemed unfit to be a bride and thus the only conventional way for her to bring her family honor was taken from her. The same day an army recruiter came into town, announcing the Hun intent of invasion, and reporting that each family had to provide one man for the army. As Mulan had no brothers, it would fall to her elderly father to join the fray as he had done years ago.

Fearful for her father's life, and needing to prove her worth to herself, Mulan cut her hair and stole her father's sword and armor taking his place in the roster masquerading as his estranged son 'Fa Ping'--something that by law would cost Mulan her life if she were to be found out.

Aided by an ancestral guardian dragon named Mushu, Mulan spent the next three years training and fighting in the war. Despite a rocky beginning Mulan became close friends with the captain, and three men in particular. In the decisive battle of the war it was Mulan's quick thinking that won it, but in the process she was severely injured and consequently discovered for who she really was. As she had saved the captain of her group he spared her life but she was disgraced, turned out from the army, and left on her own on a snowy mountaintop.

It was because of this that she came to know that some Huns had survived and were planning on ambushing the Emperor during the capital's celebrations. Mulan went on ahead to warn the others, and they were able to save the Emperor.

For this and her accomplishments in the field the Emperor praised her, and offered her a position within his court. Mulan graciously declined, saying she wished to return to her family.

Mulan remained within the Chinese army for the rest of her life, fighting and often carrying out missions for the Emperor. In time she did eventually marry and have children of her own. She died in the battlefield, and because of her fealty to her family, country, and all the ways that she had saved and defended them Mulan was honored by spirits of China and offered the chance to become one herself so that they may continue to watch over her country and lineage. Mulan agreed and her spirit was secreted in a petrified dragon egg that was given to her family. When the time came that one of theirs once more needed a guardian, just as she had, it would be given life and from it Mulan would be born again.

Personality: Mulan has grown up in a place and society that does not value women much, and has an incredibly narrow view of what the ideal and respectable woman is. That ideal is of someone who is beautiful, quiet, demure, a good housewife and mother, and completely submissive and lesser to all men.

Despite this and her incredibly traditional family, Mulan never found herself fitting into this role. She was a very absent-minded girl. A tomboy, intellect, creative, and all around unconventional person. She was an only child and so she was given a lot of attention, but in turn the family's future was placed upon her shoulders, a burden that was incredibly difficult for her to bear. This turned her into a person who is incredibly critical of herself. Even though she feels unaccepted and pressured by her family, she understands enough to know that they love her, and she loves them very much as well and wants nothing more than to bring them honour and make them happy--particularly her father. Instead of growing up thinking that her society was wrong for its treatment of women, she grew up feeling that there was something wrong with her and while it rarely outwardly shows, this has done great damage to her self-esteem, to a degree where it might almost be considered self-loathing. She's an awkward person all around, kind and patient but without much social grace and a poor conversationalist.

Beneath all these insecurities, however, lies a strong woman who is just waiting to blossom. Mulan is a fiercely determined individual, and once she sets her mind to something she does not give up. She works, works, and works often times pushing herself to the limits. She is a person with a great love for her family, country, and friends and would do most anything to protect them. When she does not brood over her worries and identity issues she can be a friendly albeit awkward and tries to get along with just about everyone. The opinions she has she holds strongly, and her moral compass is quite rigid. Ironically when it comes to etiquette and beliefs she can be a bit of a traditionalist, but she has an open mind and despite how harshly she criticizes herself, tends to be quite patient and understanding with others.

Mulan is a young girl and she grew up in a restrictive society, so she can be a little bit naive sometimes. Not as much as one would expect given that she was in the army for a long time and surrounded by men, but with the exception of three she mostly kept to herself for fear of finding out so some of that is still evident in her.

Her success in joining the army and breaking the mold, along with living a full life have mediated some of her insecurities but a lot of that still lies buried within her. She was not able to make the great changes she wished in trying to make life different for all women but she has seen the changes that have happened all around the world for them and it has made her incredibly happy. When Mulan hatches from her egg it will be with an understanding of how, more or less, the world works in this time and moderate knowledge of its history but she will still be a woman from Ancient China stepping into a world that is incredibly different. While there are many things she will be happy about, there will be just as many she's rather uncertain of.

Differences from canon: Namely, just that in canon Mulan was completely human and had no supernatural abilities. Aside from that, she is still very much the same in personality.

Power level: A
Powers: Mulan is quite the versatile fighter. She started out as a weakling, but through intense training with other troops from the Captain Shang, she was able to become one the best warriors in his army. She is strong, quick, and skilled in martial arts, the bow, sword, and quarter staff. Even more important, however, is that Mulan is a very quick thinker. She knows how to think on her feet and it has saved her on more than one occasion.

Here in CH she will have the ability to transform into a serpentine-like dragon, 15 feet in length. She may also take on a partial form in which she retains her humanoid body but develops scales, claws, and other draconic features. She has pyromancy skills in whatever form she is in, able to breath and conjure fire, and is completely resistant to all forms of heat.

Team affiliation: TEAM RAMIR

First person sample: [written]

It is good to be on Earth again. My memories of life after death are strange, foggy, but I recall all that I need to. I am not home and I miss it, but Ramir is here and so this is where I am meant to be. Things are so strange here, in this place, in this time and so I fear not being able to do right by her at times, but I am determined not to give up.

Mushu never gave up on me, and it is scary to be all alone.
